The Journey
structureandstyle: One day you finally knew what you had to do, and began, though the voices around you kept shouting their bad advice— though the whole house began to tremble and you felt the old tug at your ankles. “Mend my life!” each voice cried. But you didn’t stop. You knew what you had to do, though the wind pried with its stiff fingers at the very foundations, though...

Why grading takes me so long:
Read a page. Shake my damn head. Sit in disbelief that someone thought this was good. Check the internet to clear up my head. Finish reading paper. Craft a long letter to the student (average of 400 words) where I try to find something to praise and yet ultimately tell them why this is not good. Shake my head. They won’t even take the time to read my letter. Start again.

Sexting Ice Breakers for English Grad Students
In honor of next week’s AWP, that giant freak fest of a writing conference, I present “Sexting Ice Breakers for English Grad Students” by Hollie Adams, via McSweeney’s. (Some of these might work in person, if you’re drunk…and let’s face it, we will all be drunk.) “I suggest we begin with foreshadowing to prepare for our forays into intertextuality.” ...

Half million could lose Internet access in coming... →
Imagine trying to get online and finding out you’ve been cut off from the Internet. It’s expected to happen to millions of unsuspecting computer users because of something referred to as the Internet kill switch. It all started with six guys in, of all places, Estonia in Europe, who infected more than 4 million computers worldwide, half a million in the United States. The DNSChanger Trojan...

– The Freedom, and Perils, of Living Alone - NYTimes.com (via annaetc) I’m messy. I invite fewer people over. And I really don’t know how to let men sleep in my bed.

Progression of a CNF Thesis
Early: Essays about mother and father. Confusion. Blame. Middle: Essays about mother and father. Anger. Intense anger. Late: Essays about mother and father. Acceptance. Tenderness. It could be that I’m confusing therapy with writing CNF, but then again, I write how I feel. And I’ve been through enough therapy to accept that my feelings have and needed to change.

Rowling Returns With a New Book, This Time for... →
bibliofeminista: J.K. Rowling, the British author whose “Harry Potter” fantasy series ignited a passion for reading for millions of children around the world, has emerged from a five-year publishing hiatus with a new book: this time for adults. Little, Brown and Company, part of the Hachette Book Group, said on Thursday it had acquired the rights to publish the book, whose title and publication...

– Ann Powers on Chris Brown, Rihanna and occupying the emotionally difficult space where blues women, country singers and girl groups once trod.  (via nprmusic) This piece is one of the most profound things I’ve read on Rihanna and Chris Brown in a long time. It’s worth the read.
