Rebecca Hazelwood is a writer who puts off writing until she can stand it no longer. She loves poetry. She teaches college freshmen how to write and tries to survive graduate school. She takes a lot of gratuitous pictures of herself. Her past lives (which are never really in the past) include interests in photojournalism, French language and culture, and religious studies. She is native to Kentucky, but she has lived in Missouri and France. Now she lives in Georgia.

She also collaborates on Structure and Style, a new poetry blog.

If you want to read something good about being in your 20s, read this.

We are not so mysterious. If you want to get to know someone infinitely better, meet their parents for five minutes. We are attracted to people who were loved in the ways we were loved as children. We are attracted to people who are lacking in ways we understand.

I’m also struck by this: “We are all terrified to take our clothing off and equally eager to show our genitals to each other. Do not be so afraid.” I keep coming across that statement over and over, recently in Bernadette Mayer’s “The Way to Keep Going in Antarctica”: “Perhaps there is a life here/Of not being afraid of your own heart beating/Do not be afraid of your own heart beating.” Do not be afraid. Do not be afraid. Do not be afraid. (My life is circular. See: “Come On Baby, What Are You Afraid Of?”)
